What was the Inge Strauch Visiting Professorship?

Inge Strauch visiting professors were invited to teach and conduct research at the University of Zurich for a period of two to six months. The visiting professors, their faculties and the EDI Office jointly organized their framework program. Each visiting professor also held a public lecture about her research. The Inge Strauch Visiting Professorship was a continuation of the Hedi Fritz-Niggli Visiting Professorship (2014–2018). On 15 May 2018, the Executive Board of the University issued a decision to change the professorship’s name in order to draw attention to female academics from various fields and faculties.

Who was Professor Inge Strauch?

Professor Inge Strauch (1932–2017) was appointed as full professor of clinical psychology at UZH in 1976, making her the first female full professor at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She also served as Vice President for Research and Teaching from 1992 to 1998. In this role, she was involved in moving the University towards becoming an autonomous institution. As a member of the Executive Board of the University, Inge Strauch was instrumental in establishing the unit that is now the EDI Office.

After her professorial retirement in 1999, Inge Strauch became President of the Senior Citizens University for five years.

Who were the Inge Strauch Visiting Professors?

Professor Linda Tesar

Linda Tesar was the first Inge Strauch visiting professor, teaching and conducting research at UZH’s Department of Economics from 1 August to 31 December 2019. She is a professor at the University of Michigan’s Department of Economics. In addition, she conducts research at the National Bureau of Economic Research in the United States.

PD Dr. Inga Hege

Inga Hege was an Inge Strauch visiting professor at UZH’s Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute from 1 February to 31 July 2021. In 2017, she received a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Global Fellowship from the EU to conduct research at Dartmouth College and Ludwig-Maximillians-Universität München (LMU).

Professor Eleni Vasilaki

Eleni Vasilaki was an Inge Strauch visiting professor at the Institute of Neuroinformatics (UZH and ETH Zurich) from 1 September 2021 to 28 February 2022. She is the chair of bioinspired machine learning and head of the machine learning group at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Computer Science in the United Kingdom.

Professor Kerstin Pull

Kerstin Pull was an Inge Strauch visiting professor at UZH’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics from 1 February to 31 July 2022 and a senior research fellow at the Collegium Helveticum. She is the chair for human resource management and organization at the University of Tübingen’s Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences.

Professor Tamar El-Or

Tamar El-Or was an Inge Strauch visiting professor at UZH’s Department of Religious Studies from 1 April to 30 June 2022. She is a Sarah Allen Shaine professor for anthropology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology. In 2013, she held the Sigi Feigel Visiting Professorship for Jewish Studies at UZH. Tamar El-Or’s academic interests lie at the intersection of gender, culture and knowledge.
