National Campaign against Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

Context

Sexual harassment and sexism are societal problems that do not disappear at the doors of Switzerland’s institutions of higher education. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Several risk factors for inappropriate behavior exist at these institutions: the precarious employment conditions many researchers face, a high workload, hierarchical structures and a lack of diversity in certain disciplines and departments, to name a few.

Cross-Media Prevention and Awareness Campaign

Sexual Harassment Awareness Day (SHAD) is a cross-medial prevention and awareness campaign that came out of swissuniversities’ P7 Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunities in University Development program. The University of Lucerne took the role as leading house in creating the campaign, working together with those responsible for diversity at Swiss institutions of higher education. SHAD first took place on 25 April 2024. Next SHAD will take place on 21 April 2026.
