What does LGBTQIA+ mean?
LGBTQIA+ is an acronym formed from the first letters of the English words Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual/Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual. The + represents members of the community who identify with a sexual orientation or gender identity other than those included in the acronym. There are also numerous variations of this acronym, sometimes supplemented by an asterisk (*) to further express diversity and inclusivity. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community can be found everywhere – including at the University of Zurich (UZH).
