The Gender Equality Monitoring 2025 shows that the University of Zurich is making progress toward achieving a more balanced gender representation in academia.
The report and dashboard for the Gender Equality Monitoring 2025 were recently published. Following the milestone achieved in 2024 (see UZH News), the proportion of women in assistant professorships has increased further to 52.3 percent. This means that women now hold a majority in this professorship category for the first time.
Share of Female Professors Reaches 30%
Furthermore, in 2025, 55.7 percent of newly appointed professorships were filled by women – the highest figure since the monitoring began and the third consecutive year that the target of 40 percent has been exceeded.
The so-called "leaky pipeline" is also slowly closing: The gender gap now opens later in a career than it did ten years ago. However, it is not yet completely closed – there is still a need for action, particularly regarding full professorships. In these cases, the proportion of women is only 23.6 percent, while the overall proportion of female professors is 32.6 percent.
The trend is positive: Women are now better represented in academic careers than ever before. However, our goal remains balanced representation at all career levels.
